VIOLIN GROUP CLASSES AT GENERATION IV STRINGS

Descriptions

 

TECHNIQUE CLASS I

Violin Technique Class I

Meets Tuesdays 4:00-4:55 PM

Fall Term: September 10 - December 3, 2019 —12 group classes

Spring Term: January 7 - May 12, 2020 — 18 group classes


This class will discuss fundamentals of posture including feet, violin hold and violin hand, bow hold and bow arm movement. Students who successfully complete the class will be able to demonstrate:


-D Major Scale (one octave), G Major Scale (two octaves) and A Major Scale (two octaves)

-Even Odds (3rds) on every string with high two finger patterns as well as low two finger patterns on A and E strings while subdividing eighth and sixteenth note patterns to a MM (Metronome Marking) = 80 to the quarter.

-4th Finger exercises (5-note scales) on every string with high two finger patterns as well as low two finger patterns on A and E strings while sounding the open string below creating a double stop. For example if fingers are on A string then the bow is sounding both A string and the open E string.

-Bow strokes: detaché, staccato and legato

-Note Reading from Open G (the space two ledger lines below the treble staff) to 3 on E (the ledger line above the treble staff) with simple rhythms.

-Music Symbols: dynamics, ritardando and a tempo, staccato, tenuto, dolce, fermata, bowing direction, accent

-Tempo Markings: Largo, Lento, Adagio, Andante, Andantino, Moderato, Allergretto, Allegro, Vivace, Presto, Prestissimo


This class is REQUIRED for all students in the Generation IV Strings violin program and students must be accompanied by a guardian who will take video and class notes to be sure the material is understood for at home practice.

TECHNIQUE CLASS II

Technique Class II

Meets Tuesdays 5:00-5:55 PM

Fall Term: September 10 - December 3, 2019 —12 group classes

Spring Term: January 7 - May 12, 2020 — 18 group classes


This class will continue to address the fundamentals of posture including feet, violin hold and violin hand, bow hold and bow arm movement. Students who successfully complete the class will be able to demonstrate:


-Major, Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor and Melodic Minor Scales in the keys of D (one octave), G (two octaves) and A (two octaves) on the violin and piano.

-Finger Patterns (aka Doo Dee Dah Dees) on every string with the following finger combinations:  1 L2 L1 L2, L2 3 H2 3, 3 4 H3 4, 1 3 L1 3, L2 4 H2 4, 1 4 L1 4 while subdividing and slurring two quarters per bow then four eighths to one bow followed by eight sixteenths per bow to MM (Metronome Marking) = 80 to the quarter.

-Walking Fingers in 1st position with the following finger patters: 01, 12, 23, 34, 13, 24, 14

-Vibrato Exercises on the A and D-string harmonic with a MM = 80 to the 1/4 subdividing and slurring the same rhythms as Doo Dee Dah Dees mentioned above.

-Bow strokes: detaché, staccato, legato, slurs (up to 8 notes per bow)

-Bow Understanding: Speed, Weight and Sounding Point

-Note Reading from Open G (the space two ledger lines below the treble staff) to extended 4 on E (two ledger lines above the treble staff) with intermediate rhythms.

-Play Perpetual Motion in Bb Major (two flats: Bb, Eb)

-Music Symbols: dynamics, ritardando and a tempo, staccato, tenuto, dolce, fermata, bowing direction, accent, slur

-Tempo Markings: Largo, Lento, Adagio, Andante, Andantino, Moderato, Allergretto, Allegro, Vivace, Presto, Prestissimo

TECHNIQUE CLASS III

Technique Class III

Meets Tuesdays 6:00-6:55 PM

Fall Term: September 10 - December 3, 2019 —12 group classes

Spring Term: January 7 - May 12, 2020 — 18 group classes


This class will address posture including feet, violin hold and violin hand, bow hold and bow arm movement. Students who successfully complete the class will be able to demonstrate:


-Major, Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor and Melodic Minor Scales in all keys on the piano and select keys on the violin.

-Play Perpetual Motion in 2nd and 3rd positions.

-Finger Patterns (aka Doo Dee Dah Dees) on every string with the following finger combinations:  1 L2 L1 L2, L2 3 H2 3, 3 4 H3 4, 1 3 L1 3, L2 4 H2 4, 1 4 L1 4 while subdividing and slurring two quarters per bow then four eighths to one bow followed by eight sixteenths per bow to MM (Metronome Marking) = 112 to the quarter.

-Walking Fingers in 2nd and 3rd positions with the following finger patters: 01, 12, 23, 34, 13, 24, 14

-Vibrato Exercises on the A and D-string harmonic with a MM = 66 to the 1/4 subdividing and slurring the same rhythms as Doo Dee Dah Dees mentioned above.

-Bow strokes: detaché, staccato, legato, slurs (up to 8 notes per bow)

-Bow Understanding: Speed, Weight and Sounding Point

-Note Reading from Open G (the space two ledger lines below the treble staff) to extended 4 on E (two ledger lines above the treble staff) with intermediate rhythms. Start to identify notes in 2nd and 3rd positions.

-3 Octave Major Scales in the key of G, A and Bb (or D) with the assigned shifts slurring up to 6 notes per bow with a MM = 40 to the 1/4

-Music Symbols: dynamics, ritardando and a tempo, staccato, tenuto, dolce, fermata, bowing direction, accent, slur, sforzando, allargando, largamente, rubato, meno mosso, più mosso, agitato, accelerando, stringendo, 

-Tempo Markings: Largo, Lento, Adagio, Andante, Andantino, Moderato, Allergretto, Allegro, Vivace, Presto, Prestissimo

TECHNIQUE CLASS IV/V

Technique Class IV/V

Meets Mondays 4:45-5:40 PM

Fall Term: September 9 - December 16, 2019 —12 group classes

Spring Term: January 6 - June 1, 2020 — 18 group classes


This class will address posture including feet, violin hold and violin hand, bow hold and bow arm movement. Students who successfully complete the class will be able to demonstrate:


-Major, Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor and Melodic Minor Scales in all keys on the piano and violin.

-Play Perpetual Motion in 1st through 7th positions.

-Finger Patterns (aka Doo Dee Dah Dees) on every string with the following finger combinations:  1 L2 L1 L2, L2 3 H2 3, 3 4 H3 4, 1 3 L1 3, L2 4 H2 4, 1 4 L1 4 while subdividing and slurring two quarters per bow then four eighths to one bow followed by eight sixteenths per bow to MM (Metronome Marking) = 120-132 to the quarter.

-Walking Fingers in 1st through 7th positions with the following finger patters: 01, 12, 23, 34, 13, 24, 14

-Vibrato Exercises on the A and D-string harmonic with a MM = 40-120 to the 1/4 subdividing and slurring the same rhythms as Doo Dee Dah Dees mentioned above.

-Bow strokes: detaché, staccato, legato,

-Bow Understanding: Speed, Weight and Sounding Point

-Fluent music reading ability.

-All 3 Octave Major and Melodic Minor Scales with MM = 40 to the 1/4 and slurring 2-12 notes per bow.

-3 Octave Major and Melodic Minor 3rds, Octaves, Arpeggios, and Chromatic Scales

-Music Symbols: dynamics, ritardando and a tempo, staccato, tenuto, dolce, fermata, bowing direction, accent, slur, sforzando, allargando, largamente, rubato, meno mosso, più mosso, agitato, accelerando, stringendo, etc.

-Tempo Markings: Largo, Lento, Adagio, Andante, Andantino, Moderato, Allergretto, Allegro, Vivace, Presto, Prestissimo


This class is REQUIRED for all students in the Generation IV Strings violin program.
